Module 20: The Melodic Dictionary
Beyond Sheet Music
The greatest musicians (Mozart or Miles) could play anything they heard instantly. This is not magic; it is a learned connection between the Ear and the Fingers.

Call and Response Protocol
How to learn licks:
- Listen: Play the recording. Loop 4 bars.
- Sing: Scat sing it. Use your voice. If you can't sing it, you don't know it.
- Buzz: Buzz it on the mouthpiece to find the pitch slots.
- Play: Finally, add the buttons.

Solfege (Do-Re-Mi)
Solfege assigns a syllable to a function. 'Do' is Home. 'So' is Tension. 'Ti' is the Leading Tone (wants to resolve to Do).
When you hear a melody, try to decode it: 'Oh, that's So-Do-La-So'. The fingerings will follow automatically.

The Transcription Assignment
Task: Pick your favorite solo. Write it down. Note for note. Rhythm for rhythm.
The act of writing it down forces you to make decisions about what is actually happening versus what you think is happening. It creates a permanent file in your melodic library.
